• lemmy.ml mods have abused admin powers at some points
• it is possible that the lemmy.ml people could abuse this admin power
• as far as im aware there is no evidence that anyone has misused this specific admin power
• this specific admin power has been used to remove child porn and dox info
• since this admin power has been used for good reasons and hasnt been used for bad reasons it shouldnt be removed as an admin power

all instance admins have the ability to do this on their own instance, the functionality was added to deal with doxx info being posted so it wouldnt be visible even in the modlog, and it was used a lot to deal with the CSAM spam attack too - basically whenever this happens the relevant message will still be in the modlog but it will be changed to “Permanently Removed”. Currently there’s no evidence or even accusation that this functionality has been used for anything except the stated purposes though so i wouldnt worry too much.

Basically just the same as just defederating but you also sign a little thing promising you’ll never refederate with threads

if your instance defeds threads then it blocks any information being sent to threads at all so they wont receive anything that you post, not even your upvotes on posts will federate with threads.

The only case where this gets kind of weird is if you’re on an instance that federates via an allow list of approved instances instead of using the normal method of federating with everyone by default then blocking selected bad instances (the only large instance that uses this method for federation though is hexbear as far as im aware so its not really that important).

Fedipact is people who’ve signed some thing pledging to never federate with threads, whereas all the other ones have just defederated them without signing the pact. In reality there’s not really any difference at all.

oh ok, i stand corrected on that. the point still remains though that i dont see why people need to wait for lab grown meat to become affordable to just stop eating meat, when imo, even when its cheap enough it still wont be very good outside of certain things like burgers and sausages because of the texture (i.e. not being able to mimic how the fat feels when in between the flesh) not being able to match up to the original.

For the vast vast majority of people eating corpses is not a medical necessity or vital cultural ritual or something, (and no i dont consider just really liking the taste of flesh to be a cultural neccessity). Yes i’ve tried two of the lab grown meat brands out of curiosity (i think the first was beyond burger and the second one was an impossible burger) and both were simultaneously more expensive than the standard vegan/vegetarian and even the normal meat based versions of the food and tasted worse.

Like i dont think that consuming lab grown meat is evil or anything but I do think theres a lot of people who focus on lab grown meat being too expensive as an excuse for why they’re not vegan/vegetarian when its actually pretty mid, like i know a ton of vegans and i cant think of a single one who regularly eats lab meat, most have tried it a few times but no one really likes it too much

Just doing normal veganism is a far more realistic proposal than everyone eating expensive lab grown meat that tastes rubbish
