Most phones just use metadata to tell what way an image is supposed to be rotated and will always take the picture portrait. It was probably removed by the image host

That extension is just hiding the banner, same as if you blocked it with ublock cosmetic filtering

I think “Trending” is the wrong word, because I’ve only ever seen that section display recently created communities.
