  • This is correct in most cases but I don’t think it’s the underlying principle.

This wiki talks about the etymology, with a lot of examples. Most conform to this rule, but there are exceptions in astrophysics like an accretion disk.

Even in info tech, “hard disk” doesn’t really conform to this rule. Like is a hard disk a square hard drive or is it the round thing inside? If it’s the square hard drive, that’s not thin enough to be a “disk”. I’d it’s the round thing inside that would be hard disc, but also creates problems for floppy disk because why refer to the housing in one instance but not another.

Sadly, I think the correct answer is that either refers to a thin flat thing, some spellings are preferred for some uses.

  • Yeah I don’t get it at all.

Like seriously “animal abuse”? Maybe it is, but I’d waaay rather be a cat on a vegan diet than say… a chicken that makes the eggs I like to eat, or the KFC I enjoy so much.

Guaranteed, plenty of cats eating a vegan diet are having their nutritional needs met more satisfactorily than plenty of cats that are fed other commercial cat foods, or strays, or cats in the wild.

It’s about as “abusive” as using a laser pointer to play with your cat. A behaviour I personally find repugnant, but one enjoyed by cat owners the world over.

You can call it cat abuse if you want, but honestly on the spectrum of things that are worth censoring this barely rates a mention.

  • It’s great that the admins are putting so much effort into getting this right.

Sadly, I don’t think this is the way. Adding this to the ToS means you admins will always be in the centre of every unwinnable situation that arises.

You need a committee to deal with these issues on a case by case basis. There are many advantages to this:

    • You can be tough but flexible and adaptive
    • you can enlist the help of people with more time
    • you can enlist the help of people with experience writing policies
    • committee members can resign or be discontinued when they become embroiled in some shit storm.
    • you can retain veto power

I don’t want to be critical of the ToS because someone has put a lot of thought into it, but the most charitable thing I can say is that its unlikely to serve its intended purpose.
